Galati is the largest port on the Danube River and the second-largest port in Romania. Its advantageous position on the Danube means it has been settled for nearly 2,500 years. Believe it or not, a pair of Roman cities were located approximately three miles southwest of the current city; the ruins are open to the public. As a matter of fact, the oldest building in the city, the Sfanta Precista Monastery, is a fortified church dating from the 17th century. Undoubtedly, once known as the Town of Lime trees, is revealed to tourists through its architectural jewels, historic monuments, very interesting museums, huge green parks and beautiful gardens, as well as the natural attractions of the surroundings for all levels and ages.
