Machu Picchu remains one of the premier archaeological sites in the world and serves as a vivid reminder of the Incan Empire, its imagination, and magnificence. The citadel is surrounded by iconic Andean peaks, and includes temples, residences, fountains, and hundreds of cascading steps. In 1981, Machu Picchu was named a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
