Just 90 minutes north of Quito, the snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano is the focal point of Ecuador's most visited park, Cotopaxi National Park. Majestic and powerful, Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world, has enticed adventurous travelers, as well as nature lovers, by the excellent hiking, climbing, mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities. Others come simply to enjoy the sprawling 129 square miles of grassland and the animals who live there. Because it is located so close to the metropolitan cities of Quito and Latacunga, Cotopaxi National Park is one of the most visited parks in the country. While in the park, you can also see two smaller volcanoes: Morurco and Rumiñahui.
