Founded in 1779 on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids Tampere evolved into the most highly industrialized locality in Finland during the 19th century and became nowadays the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries. It is also a center for Finnish cultural life with its theatres and events focusing on music, literature, arts and architecture. Moreover, Tampere is, of course, the sauna capital of the world. There are more than 50 public saunas in the region. As a matter of fact, people usually go explore all must-experience saunas in Lakeland. Rajaportti public sauna, in the quaint wooden town area of Pispala, is one of Tampere's most iconic saunas.
