On the border of Skane, Karlshamn is an excellent stopover for those traveling from Kristianstad in the west to Kalmar in the north on the road to Stockholm. The historical buildings of Karlshamn are well preserved and the Culture Center has some very interesting attractions. One of Sweden's finest antique trading houses is situated at the Skottsbergska garden. The buildings are from the 1700's and in the cellars you can see how business was conducted 200 years ago. As a matter of fact, for many Swedes who sailed to America, Karlshamn was the last they saw of the old country before heading to a new life in the wilds of the Dakotas or such. Long a rival of Karlskrona, this old port city has often been a battleground between the Danes and the Swedes.
