Dating back from more than 700 years, Linkoping is the center of an old cultural region, mostly known nowadays for its university and its high-technology industry. During the Middle Ages, the Old Town (east bank) developed at the river's only fjord as a commercial center with busy river traffic. The great square, still used as the marketplace for the town and surrounding countryside, was surprisingly modern for the period. Dominating the city`s skyline is the tower of the cathedral - one of the finest buildings in Scandinavia. As a matter of fact, the city also offers: huge green parks, an adventure pool and swimming baths, a newly built Diocese and County Library, the world famous Old Linkoping with Valla Recreation Area, the Air Force Museum, the great County Museum, and fine churches.
