Dating back over 700 years, Linkoping is the center of an old cultural region, known nowadays for its university and its high-tech industry. During the Middle Ages, the Old Town (east bank) developed at the river's only fjord as a commercial center with busy river traffic. The great square, still used as the marketplace for the town and surrounding countryside, was surprisingly modern for the period. Dominating the city's skyline is the tower of the cathedral, one of the finest buildings in Scandinavia. The city also offers large green parks, an adventure pool and swimming baths, a newly built Diocese and County Library, the world famous Old Linkoping with Valla Recreation Area, the Air Force Museum, the great County Museum, and many fine churches.
