Montignac is a town in the Dordogne. During the early fall of 1940, an amazing archaeological discovery was made above the Vézère River near the town of Montignac. Lascaux Cave is one of the world`s great treasures. It houses palaeolithic cave paintings of exceptional quality, size, sophistication and antiquity. Estimated to be up to 20,000 years old, the paintings consist primarily of large animals, once native to the region. Since the Lascaux Cave is closed to the public, a replica has been created at Montignac, 650 ft. from the original cave.
