Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden covering more than 1,853 square miles. The midnight sun can be admired from mid-May to mid-July. The fantastic countryside around Kiruna offers a varied landscape ranging from mountains with beautiful crystal clear lakes and lush forests, to ancient wooded areas with lively streams. Not far from Kiruna lies Mount Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain with an altitude of 6,945 feet, and Lake Tornetrask. Kiruna is a mining town as well as a space town. It is home to Sweden's only space center, founded over 50 years ago, and one of only two space centers in all of Europe. Nowadays the space center is mainly used for research on microgravity and atmospheric conditions.
