Scarborough had been a fishing port in the shadow of fearsome castle built by Henry II, and hosted the Scarborough Fair, a six-week market that attracted merchants from across Europe. The ruined castle is still an authoritative presence atop its promontory between the North and South Bays. The town on the Yorkshire coast almost feels like it's trapped in the Victorian era. Despite its historical feel, it remains a fun and friendly place to enjoy the English summertime.
