Taranto is an important military and commercial port in Puglia, thought to be founded by the ancient Spartans, who used to call it Taras. Seafood is this town's claim to fame, as its strategic location, on the Salento Peninsula, bordering the seas of Piccolo and Grande, make it easy to be awash in the region's (some even say Italy's) best shellfish. You can enjoy the town's delicious local cuisine, its beautiful marina and coastline, and the Castello Aragonese from the Lungomare Vittorio Emanuele III.
