Founded by the Romans, Trento is a beautiful city located on the banks of the Adige River and surrounded by mountains. Although it spent most of its history, from the 10th century though 1813, as a German-Austrian bishopric ruled by powerful princely bishops, Trento is essentially Italian. Unlike other towns in the north, which tend to lean heavily on their Austrian heritage, Trento offers broad piazze and ocher-colored palaces.
