Mito, the prefectural capital of Ibaraki Prefecture is 100km northeast of Tokyo and has a population of around 264,000 people. Mito was the power base of the Mito clan during the Edo Period (1603-1867), one of the three main families of the Tokugawa regime that dominated Japan during this time. Mito is famous for its natto - fermented soybeans and Ibaraki Prefecture for its production of strawberries and grass turf. Mito rose to prominence during the Edo Period, when Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, chose the city as the base for one of his three most important family branches, along with Wakayama and Nagoya. Because of this, Mito was a major power base with considerable impact on the politics and intellectual history of the era.
