The birthplace of Salvador Dalí, Figueres, is famous because of the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which is the most visited museum in Spain after the Prado in Madrid and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. It was built by Dali on the ruins of a 19th century Theatre. The building has a large glass dome and its edges are decorated by large egg shapes. It is, in its entirety, Dali's greatest work, and was created by Dali specifically to offer its visitors a unique visual experience. The historic center of Figueres is bounded by remains of its old wall, put up in the Middle Ages to defend the town. As a matter of fact, beautiful corners from the medieval period are preserved, like the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, remodeled in Neoclassical style and where the council building stands, or the area around Carrer Magre, where there old Jewish quarter was located.
