The capital of the Region of Aragon is located on the banks of the Ebro River, halfway between Madrid and Barcelona. Overlooking the Ebro River in the city center is baroque multi-domed Nuestra Senora del Pilar basilica, a famous pilgrimage site with a shrine to the Virgin which is a sight to behold. With its 2,000 year history, Zaragoza offers a stunning legacy of monuments in the streets of the city, vestiges of the Roman, Moorish, Jewish and Christian communities who left their mark on the place: Roman ruins such as the Circus; jar-style landmarks, combining Islamic and Gothic architecture such as the Aljafería Palace, an 11th-century Moorish palace, and the Cathedral of the Savior, begun in the 12th century with the UNESCO World Heritage designations; and the work of genius painter Francisco de Goya.
