Bath is located on Merrymeeting Bay on the Maine Coast, and is known historically for its shipbuilding industry, one of the largest in the United States, which earned the city the nickname `The City of Ships`. The Bath Iron Works shipyard has made ships for the United States Navy since 1884. Bath is a popular tourist town because of the beautiful architecture found in the historic center, dating from the 19th century.
