Hampton is the easternmost city on the Virginia Peninsula, situated on Hampton Roads directly across from Norfolk. It is one of the oldest cities in Virginia, having been settled in 1610. Hampton is home to such important sights as the historically black Hampton University, Langley Air Force Base, the Virginia Air and Space Center, beautiful Buckroe Beach to the northeast of downtown, and Fort Monroe on Old Point Comfort, an area fortified since the 17th century.
