New Bedford is the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts. It lies at the mouth of the Acushnet River on Buzzards Bay, 54 miles south of Boston. The New Bedford Whaling Museum, the 19th-century fishing schooner Ernestina, and the Seamen`s Bethel (Whaleman`s Chapel) reflect the city`s historic and seafaring past. It is well-known for its large Portuguese-American community, which has traditionally been closely tied to the fishing industry.
