Burlington, population 42,899, is the most populous city in Vermont, and is the smallest largest city of any U.S. state. It is located on the shores of Lake Champlain, and is a very noteworthy historical city, known as the hometown of Ethan Allen, the leader of the `Green Mountain Boys` in the Revolutionary War. The beautiful downtown area called Church Street Marketplace is for pedestrians only and is home to dozens of locally owned shops and restaurants.
