Pensacola, on the western edge of the Florida Panhandle, was the first settlement by the Spanish in Florida, when Don Tristan de Luna attempted a colony here six years before Juan Ponce de Leon founded St. Augustine. For a time it was the capital of Spanish West Florida, and when Florida became a U.S. territory, it was one of the most important cities in the state. Today Pensacola is well-known for its U.S. Naval base, where all Navy and Marine pilots receive their training, and is home to the Blue Angels flying battalion. Pensacola is also well-known for its beaches, which have been branded `the world`s whitest` by the local tourism board for generations.
