The Great River Road takes adventure-seekers on the open road as it parallels the Mississippi River. The Great River Road in Illinois National Scenic Byway clocks in at 550 miles and is arguably the most gorgeous and picture-perfect segment of the drive. The southern segment of the National Scenic Byway passes south of East St. Louis and Collinsville down to Cairo, with cities like Cape Girardeau on the other side of the river in Missouri.
The Great River Road is a collection of state and local roads that follow the course of the Mississippi River through ten states. A long the southern portion of this drive the Shawnee National Forest is easily accessible. Start this trip in Missouri visiting St. Louis (a major city in Missouri along the Mississippi River, known for the Gateway Arch, the tallest monument constructed in the United States). After that, drive to Illinois, to reach Great River Road South Area (with its 550-mile route on Illinois' western border offers breathtaking views and majestic landscapes that inspire and soothe the soul) and lastly, in Tennessee, enjoy Memphis (one of the more historic and culturally significant cities, home of blues and rock and roll).
